PLEX

Plex

Over the weekend I installed a suite of Plex tools - the Media Server, the Media Center and the Mobile controller. All are incredibly well done - particularly the mobile app - but I'm still confused as to how the experience is superior to just browsing a list of well organized files. Yes, there is cover art occasionally. No, it doesn't seem as smart as my own ability to name a folder and put in a folder. I think I may just be missing one ingredient - PlexSync, for watching any of your media on any device, anywhere. Can't argue with that.

  • For me the magic happens when... ...I start watching something on one device, pause it, and resume after watching other things or on another device. ...CouchPotato or SickBeard downloads something, renames it logically, files it away, and causes Plex to update its library automatically and I've haven't intervened at all. ...The video is too big to fit over the pipe, and Plex automatically transcodes it into something more manageable (for instance, if I'm watching something using my iPad in a corner of my house that has a bad wifi signal, or on the bus over 3G) ...Plex lets me shoe-horn a streaming service onto a device that doesn't offer it natively (YouTube on Roku, Hulu on GoogleTV)
