The Problem with Myspace

Myspace
Recently, Music Think Tank posted this article about the total failure of Myspace to leverage the position they are in (at least in terms of musician tools on the site). It caused a bit of a stir - garnering some great responses - but no one really has a solution to the issue. Not that I think anyone coming up with a solution to a problem for a gigantic corporation would be heard anyway but it'd be interesting if someone put it out there in an obvious way. I also know that a giant entity like MySpace isn't going to move swiftly or progressively on anything.. once you reach a certain size, your ability to change crawls to a much more conservative pace.

Personally, I think the following would do everyone some good:
  • Get the obtrusive ads out of the player. It's aggravating and just drives users away. Simpler solutions exist and should be taken advantage of.
  • Make the player embeddable anywhere. Either the entire widget filled with songs or individual tracks.
  • Make songs available to download. It's an option in the upload area but doesn't seem to actually do anything if you enable it.
In the end, I don't think MySpace is going anywhere. The majority of people using it for the social networking aspect of it are probably dropping like flies but they have positioned themselves to offer such a huge amount of media I can't really foresee them dropping off the face of the planet the way Friendster did.

In your opinion, what's the best way for Myspace to leverage the fact that are synonymous with searching for music? What obvious opportunities are being missed?

What is it you're looking for?
