When Broken Social Scene played here recently they did a nice job of allowing all the individual players to showcase some of the music from their side projects. One such endeavor was from multi-instrumentalist Charles Spearin (also of Do Make Say Think), now surfacing online as The Happiness Project. Basically, he recorded interviews with many of his neighbors on the subject of "happiness" and found himself intrigued by the timbre, rhythm, pitch of speaking as juxtaposed to music. This wraps it up nicely:

I wanted to see if I could blur the line between speaking and singing, and write music based on these accidental melodies [of speech]. So, I had some musician friends play these neighbourhood melodies as close as they could on different instruments (the tenor saxophone on Mrs. Morris, the harp as Marisa, etc.) and then I arranged them as though they were songs.

I'm not always one for a super challenging listen but seeing this performance and, now, hearing it again has me quite intrigued. It's not always pleasing to the ears but conceptually it's quite strong and worth spending a few minutes with - at the very least.
