Jesse Dallal put together this nice rundown, Some thoughts on the future of TV, that I suggest you peruse. The overhead view is that apps really are the ala carte future that we're barreling towards and that while you see homogenization of the channel experiences now, there will be breakout performances once the overall space slows down a bit and it isn't a race to the starting line.

For me, the most interesting aspect of the future of TV is "The Great Unbundling" and the inevitable "Great Rebundling." Wile the unbundling is still in progress, the rebundling is already happening with Amazon Streaming Partners and Hulu's Skinny Bundle. It's an interesting cycle to watch as it seems to be happening at a rapid pace. The future of TV is most certainly going to be interesting.
