Shackleton Photo Discovery

posted January 11, 2016 #

Many years ago I posted about the Sir Ernest Shackleton 'Endurance' journey to Antartica. The early 1900's voyage yielded some beautiful color photos. Beyond being a wonderful glimpse at such a time and place, they're also some of the first color photos, period.

The 'Endurance' got trapped in ice and sank, losing many of the 550 photo plates that were taken. However, some were recently recovered. They're black and white and pretty damaged but it's unbelievable that they've survived for 100 years frozen in the cold.
