Saint Cloud Hill

In Nashville (and likely most other cities), there is a public park off the beaten path that was taken over by a group of homeless individuals, resulting in a rather impressive Tent City. These people all had jobs and were attempting to get out of the situation they were in but had not been able to earn enough to afford a more permanent residence. Filmmakers Jace Freeman and Sean Clark moved in to the Tent City to document the lives there, right as the city decided to clamp down on allowing the residents to stay.
I was fortunate enough to see an early screening of the resulting film - Saint Cloud Hill - this week. It is, as you might imagine, pretty heartbreaking. The leader of the encampment, Chris Scott, is providing a harbor for people to get their lives together. He helps people get out of addiction, find work and feel safe. The city promised to find new homes for everyone staying there but ended up just putting them in a hotel for two weeks and nothing more.
The film will show on PBS stations tonight - May 30th - as part of the Reel South series. If you have the chance to watch it, please do. The film itself may be Nashville-centric but the problems are much further reaching.
