An internet waystation.

it me - michael eades

👋 Hi, I'm Michael Eades; a long time Internet dweller, design dabbler, dangerously amateur developer, online social experimenter and frequent curator.

Currently working as VP of Product at Smarter Apps. I also keep the lights on at a boutique record label called yk records, a podcast network called We Own This Town and a t-shirt shop called Nashville Galaxy. Previously, I built things for Vimeo OTT, VHX, KNI and Spongebath Records.

This site is an archive of ephemera I find entertaining; tweets, videos, random links, galleries of images.

Reach out via threads or good ole email if you have anything to discuss. I do my best to reply in a timely manner.

for the record: "yewknee" is a nonsensical word with no literal meaning but a unsurprisingly nerdy etymology. It is pronounced, "yoo • knee."

ongoing projects

yk Records →
started in 2009 as a conduit for music that friends had no plans on releasing. now it's a full fledged boutique label focused on releasing quality music from a variety of styles. you know, like a label does. Here's a sampler on Soundcloud and a different one on Spotify. Options.

We Own This Town →
Originally a Nashville area music blog, this site has grown into a full blown podcast network as of 2018. It's an attempt to bring together creative folks about a variety of interesting topics.

I host this show all about Nashville local music outside the expectations of the city. I'm biased but all the shows are good.

Nashville Galaxy →
An online t-shirt shop featuring beloved and defunct Nashville area businesses. Very niche audience on this one but I tend to think niche is good.

some noteworthy other things

Chris Gaines: The Podcast →
published along with co-host Ashley Spurgeon; a limited series podcast that takes an absurdly researched deep dive into the time that Garth Brooks took on a fictional personality named Chris Gaines.

Garth Brooks Chris Gaines Countdown →
to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the time Garth Brooks took on the fictional personality Chris Gaines and appeared on Saturday Night Live in character, I GIF'ed the entire episode. It's a lot of GIFs; please use them.

Whiskerino →
a social network built around communal beard growing for four months. yes, it was as weird as it sounds but equally fascinating and enjoyable.

Moustache May →
an offshoot of the beard growing contest mentioned above. equal amounts of oddball fun but only a month long.

Summer Mix Series →
before all music was streaming everywhere, Internet music fans would swap zip files of music. it was truly a strange and wonderful time.

Patrick Cowley - Some Funkettes

the treasure trove of Cowley material keeps coming and it's all. so. good.

City Cast

startup looking to launch quick bite news episodes in individual cities. lovely idea.
Way way back in March of 2020, I got my first look at the video for "Jack of Fools," a track off the forthcoming Spencer Cullum's Coin Collection LP and I was completely mesmerized.

Tim Ward created this completely psychedelic experience and I can't say enough great things about it. I love the simple "frame in clouds" setup and how he continuously breaks that frame with acid warped "trails" and a color palette that would fit right in 1960's San Francisco.

The track itself is, obviously, wonderful as well. I can't wait for everyone to hear this record and fall in love with it as much as I have. Give it a watch or listen and prepare for more on Nov 12th.
It's October so you know I've been compiling a Halloween playlist of absurdities. If you have suggestions, let me know. I want all the gems. Send them all!

Let's just dive into some distractions. Stay safe out there. Keep wearing the dang mask.
Tower Defense is prepping their second full-length release, In the City, and the first single from that release just hit the streaming services. To contextualize it, the band put together a playlist of influences that molded them as a band and informed the album.
It's on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music - so you've no excuse not to listen!

Unsurprisingly, it's a wonderfully eclectic mix of late 90's indie underground, 80's new wave & post punk and a few surprising recent influences (don't sleep on Woolen Men!).

Enjoy and then follow the band and snag that LP.
Today, Coupler debuted a new video for "The Technocrat" off of their EP, The Rhythm Method. The folks at I Heart Noise had these kind words to say:
“The Technocrat” – its danceable, very groovy and yet it so much darker than your average dancefloor filler that it could easily appeal to someone into Suicide (as well as early Cure or Sisters of Mercy).
It's a nice debut for the track and I'm thankful for the insights they provided. All too often when a video "premieres" somewhere, the blog will literally copy paste the press release and call it a day.

For me, personally, the video (directed by Ben Marcantel) harkens back to vintage videogames. It's a series of still images - you can hardly even say it has anything resembling "Frames Per Second" - but it tells a story of intrigue, car chases and even a little gunplay. A dash of imagination is necessary to fill in the gaps but it reminds me of nights plucking away at a Tandy-1000. It's not an exact 1:1 of that experience but there's enough of a nostalgia twinge to be pleasant.

It's a great song and probably among the most upbeat the band has ever been. Nice to hear them stretch out into these kinds of territories.
