Osmo Pocket

posted January 28, 2019 #

The axiom of "the best camera is the one you have on you" is generally great advice. I used to pine for a DSLR but knew that carrying around an extra satchel of gear would actually lead to fewer photos, not more. My iPhone does more than the job necessary... most of the time.

But recently I've been intrigued by this Osmo Pocket device. It's a camera that can do image stabilization via the gimbal mounted lens, it can do automated panormas, motionlapse and log exposure nightshots. It's got a lot of bells and whistles and it's pretty tiny. I've not used one but the demo videos make the interface look... interesting! And there's a whole iOS app component that can, optionally, go with it to give more control. The #osmopocket tag on Instagram has plenty of examples of it in use.

I'm not convinced I need a secondary camera on me at any time but I do love the options available here. It's a touch expensive ($350 USD) but that's really the biggest barrier to my interest.
