Ornitographies

Geologist / photographer / fine artist Xavi Bou has created a mesmerizing collection of work with his Ornitographies series. In it, he captures flocks of birds through timelapse photography and the ornate shapes they create through their flight patterns. The more insightful version of that is here:

Xavi Bou focuses on birds, his great passion, in order to capture in a single time frame, the shapes they generate when flying, making visible the invisible.

Unlike other motion analysis which preceded it, Ornitographies moves away from the scientific approach of chronophotography used by photographers like Eadweard Muybridge and Etienne-Jules Marey.

I've shared a few of the images in this post but I can't recommend partaking in all of them post haste. The images are otherworldly, occasionally foreboding and always unbelievable.
