Mort Garson - Plantasia

posted January 29, 2019 #

I posted about this a few years back but the YouTube video I had linked has been removed. So, it's time for a revisit.

Composer Mort Garson was a pioneer of electronic music and made a number of heavily themed albums using the, then new, Moog synthesizer. There's an entire series of Zodiac Signs albums, an album entitled Wozard of Iz inspired by The Wizard of Oz and even an album of dark synth compositions released under the pseudonym Lucifer called Black Mass.

But for my money, nothing tops Plantasia, a ridiculously fun and upbeat album of songs meant to be played to plants to encourage growth. The instrumentation is borderline cheesy but feels so triumphant and optimistic, it's impossible not to love.

Plantasia was recently featured in an episode of HBO's High Maintenance and I can only hope that serves to bring some new fans to the Garson realm; as it is a fascinating place to be.
