If you don't consider yourself a fan of Stephen Fry I can only assume it's due to a lack of exposure. His latest undertaking is a BBC2 series entitled Fry's Planet Word - a five part series investigating language - where it comes from, how it binds us as a species, all the variations, which are dying, which are coming up. The first episode covers a lot of ground but it is a subject worthy of investigation. If you don't happen to have BBC2 you can just watch this video that has nothing to do with the show but demonstrates Fry's passion for words.
