If you're a designer - particularly a UI designer - please force yourself to take the time today to read through this A List Apart article on
Dark Patterns: Deception vs Honesty in UI Design. Principles such as Aid Rapid Comprehension or Prevent User Mistakes seem quite obvious on the surface but the level of subversion and underhandedness that occurs on many sites speak directly against these ideas.
Once you're done with that, take a little trip through
DarkPatterns.org that not only describes many of the nefarious
tactics but also has a
company list of businesses involved in these undertakings.
