Thanks to Waxy I spent a good chunk of time exploring the new musicians platform, Bandcamp. The screencast gives a good idea of what the site is capable of but the basic gist is that bands can upload their music (uncompressed) and bandcamp creates an easy to use platform to sell it or give it away. A very simple admin tool lets a user specify if a track/album costs $1, $10, no dollars, or pay what you want.

They have more tools in the works - i.e. news, tour dates, etc - but decided to tackle the problem of music distribution first, which is admirable in and of itself. With more and more bands wanting to sell their music online this appears to be a great, and direct, route to get the music out there. The profit angle is a bonus if you can wrangle it, it's just nice to have a repository for music distribution that isn't myspace or some poorly tagged mp3's inside a zip file.
