Adult Swim Lineup

Adult Swims
Delocated, The Mighty Boosh, Check It Out, With Dr. Steve Brule
Thanks to Joey for sending over the upcoming Adult Swim lineup. It's nice to see that Venture Bros are coming back but it's especially pleasing to see that a number of new shows will be debuting.
  • Delocated - a family in the witness protection agency decides to move to New York and be part of a reality show. Chris sent me the pilot and I'm hooked on the absurdity. Plus, Jon Glaser is quickly becoming someone that can do no wrong.
  • The Mighty Boosh - finally a US channel showing one of my favorites. Maybe this means DVD's can be released on our side of the pond.
  • Check It Out, With Doctor Steve Brule - the Tim & Eric show is extremely hit or miss for me but Steve Brule seems like a fitting spinoff.
The rest of the lineup looks good too - with the exception of Drinky Crow. I love the Tony Millionaire illustration style but the cartoon is just not good.

I had a surprising amount of things to say about the Adult Swim lineup huh? I had no idea...

The Mighty Book of Boosh

Book of Boosh
No word on if this will be readily available on the States but on September 18th Canongate will publish The Mighty Book of Boosh, a graphic design / photographic journal of all sorts of materials related to The Mighty Boosh. The material within looks great for any hardcore Boosh fan but it's an even better added bonus that that majority of designs and photoshoots were put together by Dave Brown - better known as Bollo.

PieFace Records

PieFace
I stumbled across the official site for PieFace Records last night and couldn't be more pleased with what I heard. If PieFace doesn't ring a bell, you aren't watching enough of The Mighty Boosh, for which you should be ashamed. I was actually hunting for an mp3 of "Electro Boy, Electro Girl" but having stumbled across this page I think I'll probably have "Eels" stuck in my head all day long. It's unfortunate that the song's on the player are only samples but it will have to do until the full-length Boosh album is unleashed.

Hodge Podge #10

Quality not quantity for this round:
  • Sweet - a short film from 2000 starring Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt - aka The Mighty Boosh. It's not the funniest thing I've seen (nor work appropriate) but as a fanboy, I've gotta see it all. Thank you Mason Bernard.
  • Hulk Out - 117 reasons why Bruce Banner turned into the Hulk from the 80's television show. They start out mundane and by the time you hit #19 you have to wonder what was going on in the writing room. Via Kevin.
  • KoolHaas Houselife - this movie looks slow but it's basically the equivalent of architecture porn.
  • Jason Segel tapped for Muppets movie - somehow this actually makes sense.

4x4

Only because Ronnie tapped me to do this am I participating in the upcoming insight into me. Yewknee.com really isn't so much about me but just about crap I'm seeing on the web. So, if you're not into reading about some fairly pointless anecdotes about my life please skip this entry. Regardless. Here goes:
4 Jobs You've Had Grocery Bagger - I, like many teens, applied to be a grocery bagger at the tender age of 16. It obviously looked easy and I wanted some income. Upon receiving the job I went in for "training" and was informed that if I was sixteen years of age or older I had to work for 4 hours a shift. My mother had informed me that I could not work for more than 3 hours a shift. So ended my time as a bagger. I never touched a single grocery but I did receive a check for $4.25 to pay for my training time.

Telco - After my grocery bagging dreams were squashed I got a job at a 'Telecommunications Solutions' plant where I was drawn in by the wage of $6.15 an hour (high for the time) and the promise that I would be working with payphones. Being a wannabe amateur 'phreak' I couldn't pass it up. I ended up taking apart handsets for awhile but eventually "graduated" to such tasks as cutting various lengths of wire and building parts for air conditioners. It was not a "fun" job per se but I did not hate it.

Movie Theatre Manager - after working in the vaguely sweatshop-ish environment of Telco I moved on to something a bit more appropriate for my age and worked at a second-run movie theatre. Tickets were $1.75 and all the movies were long past their due date of having left the main complexes. I moved from concessions to projectionist to assistant manager in my time working there and it was probably the greatest job any teen could possibly hope for. Tons of my friends worked there and once I got keys to the place it took things to an even better level. We had cookouts on the roofs, threw a few parties after hours and watched a crapload of movies. Most of my fondest stories come from this time.

Webmaster at Spongebath Records - I don't recall the specifics of how this went down but once I moved to Murfreesboro to go to college I ended up writing an email to the webmaster at Spongebath Records to inform him of an improper link or maybe some "design insight" that I felt I had the right to share. Regardless, that webmaster ended up being the guitarist from Fluid Ounces (Brian Rogers) and somehow had me come in to meet with the label owner (Rick Williams) about fleshing out the site and improving the web presence in general. I worked there for a number of years doing my best to make halfway decent recommendations for internet marketing of the bands and maintaining the site. I actually think I did a pretty good job - though I admittedly "borrowed" a bit too much inspiration from the A&M Records site of the time. For the most part this was a job opportunity that helped establish where I am today and I am extremely grateful for it.
4 TV Shows I’m Watching LOST - duh. I think everyone I know watches this. I stopped trying to "figure out" what was happening and am just enjoying the ride.

Breaking Bad - I really really really can't recommend this show enough. It's about a down-and-out high school chemistry teacher that finds out he has 6 months to live so he turns to making meth to scrounge up some extra cash for his family before he departs from this world. Sounds absolutely absurd but it's an incredibly well written / acted dark dramedy. And it's only 7 episodes, so it can't hurt to get invested, right?

Black Books - I actually just finished this series last night. "The show is based around the lives and often surreal antics of its foul-mouthed, eccentric, misanthropic, alcoholic Irish owner Bernard Black, his assistant Manny, and their friend Fran." It's a superbly solid piece of comedy from start to finish.

The Mighty Boosh - yes I'm still watching it over and over again. Yes, I still love it. It's bizarre but there is something about the production values (lo-fi but not too lo-fi) that keep me coming back. Oh, and the undeniable characters, writing and interactions between Vince and Howard. I can't thank Mason Bernard enough for introducing me to all I know of British TV.
4 Places I’ve Been I wrote up a bunch of crap about some places I've been but since I've yet to go outside the US it seems really boring because all of the best trips I've taken have been made great by the people that were accompanying me along the way. I mean, most cities are basically the same anyway, right? Here's the short version.

Chicago, IL - Winter 05 - group trip with tons of my Tenessee pals.
Austin, TX - SXSW - every year I go, every year it is better than the last. Basically everyone I know that resides in Austin is the best.
Vegas, 2006 - Ronnie, his wife Claire, a bunch of Scots, the Hales, the Harkeys. Amazing.
New York - CMJ - I don't even remember what year this was but I do remember it being grand.

Other notable metropolitan areas I have visited: DC, Norfolk, Charlotte, Raleigh, San Francisco (so good it's like a second home), Atlanta, Memphis, Phoenix, LA, Seattle and a bunch more.
4 Music Artists I’m Listening To Right Now Blockhead - Uncle Tony's Coloring Book
Supergrass - Diamond Hoo Hah
Hotpipes - Future Bolt
Various Artists - Hibernation Realization Mix (may be a cop-out but I had to listen to it alot to get the tracklisting together).
I officially tap Paige and Mixel to take on the task of answering these questions.. though it is quite the time commitment so I understand if they pass.

Boosh news

Mighty Boosh: The Movie - apparently it is in the works.

If you are somehow still unfamiliar with The Mighty Boosh - go here and tell your boss you're busy for the rest of the day. Though, honestly, they are best enjoyed as full episodes - not youtube snippets.

Look at THESE

A few fun things to look at / listen to:
  • Sammy Stephens on Ellen - not funny enough to be an official Friday video but certainly bizarre and desperate that a national televised talk show has the "It's just like.. just like a Mini-Mall" guy on as their special guest. Writers Strike desperation - engage!
  • We Sell 4 You - best old KNI site rip job I've seen in awhile. And by best I mean absolutely totally ghetto.
  • CR2 Typeface - I think I'm going to purchase this.. something about it just does the right things for me.
  • Eastern Hearts Head North - Nashville band making some mighty fine rock that I had no idea existed until a friend from Norfolk pointed them out to me. How does that happen?
  • Converse Extensions - gross.

Friday Videos Holiday Spectacular - Dec 7th, 2007

AD/BC Full Special (click top left image panel to start)

The Mighty Boosh - "The Crack Fox"

Ad Exec

Tyson Montage - NSFW

Aquaman Dance Party - WTF?

T1000

"I don't think France is a country."

Vader Redub
The top two videos are full episodes and 110% worth watching. I realize not everyone has a spare 45 minutes lying around but please take time to watch them both at some point during the weekend. The GUBA video player controls are insane non-intuitive but it's the only place I could find the full episode.. turns out if you right-click the video you can play / pause at your leisure.

The Tyson clip is very NSFW but you have to see all the clips together.

The Vader Redux is a hilarious concept but waay too long. Do yourself a favor and stop watching it after about 30 - 40 seconds, you'll have the taste you need.

Enjoy your weekend.

Thanksgiving Vegetation

This Thanksgiving break provided a much needed reprieve from the world of computing / coding / overworking and allowed me to vegetate my brain on quite a few films / tv shows. Here's a rundown:

No Country for Old Men Trailer
The new Coen Brothers film No Country for Old Men was absolutely top notch. While it was a bit brutal at times it never strayed into shock value territory where anything was being done just to grab the audience's attention - everything was pertinent to the storyline. The shots were gorgeous, the dialogue was fantastic and the characters were unbelievable. I had high hopes for this and it managed to fulfill all of my expectations. Let's hope they can keep going.

Before The Devil Knows You're Dead Trailer
Did Ethan Hawke go away for awhile and is just now starting to make some sort of triumphant comeback or did I just stop paying attention? His performance, coupled with Philip Seymour Hoffman, was perfectly desperate. Without giving too much away, Before The Devil Knows You're Dead is the story of two brothers who decide that robbing their parents jewelry store is the cure to all their financial woes. You can imagine the downward spiral of events that occur once the robbery goes sour.

Jazz Trance
Somehow I managed to download and consume all three seasons of The Mighty Boosh over the last four days. Granted, that's only 14 episodes but I basically devoured it. The first season, set in the Zooniverse, is probably my favorite as there are many moments, like the one seen attached to this post, centering around the ridiculous conversations between Howard and Vince but every episode has something great about it. I'm officially addicted.
