How is it that the short weeks at work somehow feel the longest? A question for the ages! If you haven't watched that Kung Fury short yet, get on it now. You'll thank yourself later. Beyond that, enjoy the following distractions:
  • Riker - Episode 1 - a TNG spin-off focused on Riker? Yes please. Thank you Paul for the heads up on this.
  • Trevor Noah - Daily Show tryout - trying out Jon Stewarts chair. Not super funny but interesting to see that the promotion has begun for his September takeover.
  • Temporary Secretary Live Debut - despite being in the McCartney catalog for a long time, this is the live debut of it. It's every bit as awkward as the recording but lovable specifically because of that.
  • Hackerman's Hacking Tutorial - just another Kung Fury teaser for you to be convinced to get into this wacky short.
  • Trapos - Superstition - I have no idea what this series is but the Rag characters are one part Menomena and one part Mighty Boosh. It's weird and I'm glad to be ignorant to its intentions.
  • Teen Men - Adventure Kids video - I shared this earlier in the week but if you haven't caught this HazelSt creation, do so now.
  • Berlin 1945 - color footage of Berlin after the bombing. Not so much funny as it is fascinating. The sound design also makes it feel even weirder and sadder given the destruction.
  • Sam Prekop - A Geometric - very atmospheric, ambient piece of work from Prekop but I like it. Good mood piece to improve your day.
  • The Chips - "Rubber Biscuit" - going to make this my first Summer Jam.
I'm also looking forward to this, as every season has been great.

I'm off to Salem, MA this weekend to check out some witch stuff with my lady and enjoy the long weekend. If you have any suggestions, drop me a line. Enjoy this long list of distractions - you earned it simply by reading this.
  • Mad Men Series Finale Alternative Ending - no, this has nothing to do with the GIF above. And, yes, spoilers within if you haven't seen the finale yet.
  • Redrawing Taylor Swift - Shake it Off Rotoscoped - 49 students were given 52 frames of Shake It Off and redrew it in whatever style they wanted. Results are compelling just for the ADD nature of it all.
  • Maya Rudolph Commencement - a bit of an endurance challenge but the funny moments are pretty absurdly on point.
  • Bloodsport Mentos Commercial - I'll be honest, I've never seen Bloodsport and if you showed me this and told me it was an honest-to-god Mentos commercial, I'd believe you without hesitation. via Lee.
  • What is Dropbox? - yes, you know what Dropbox is but this is a nice new ad from them. Apparently worked on by some familiar faces.
  • Golden Age of Knowledge 2013 - this is a seven-minute commercial for a series of books. It's slow at first but it gets continuously more absurd. How is this real? How is it seven minutes?! via John
  • SHEER MAG - Fan The Flames - I've listened to this song a good 20 times this week. The distorted vocals are just fascinating to my ears.. and the visuals are unexpected and delightful.
  • Final Letterman Top Ten - Letterman's final show was the end of an era and it's good to see him going out on a nice high note.
  • Letterman's Final Thank You - to me, it's rare to see honest outpouring of emotions on TV. It's not exactly a medium designed for authenticity, so it's good to take in these moments. Letterman wasn't a big part of my life or leaving a hole in television / Internet viewing but I applaud him for all he's done.

I've been in TN all week and not spent a ton of time on the ole Internet. Hopefully this weekly dump of distraction serves its purpose properly and you find your mind wandering to more important subjects, like what are you going to do with your weekend?
  • Rick & Morty Simpsons Crossover - it's a great Adult swim gag that crosses over into the Simpsons universe and then into the Futurama universe. Should I be watching this show? I loved this.
  • Emotional Titanic Flute - the best part of this is that it's over 4 minutes long. That's a lot of emotion.
  • Better If You Didn't - Step Out of the Way - the first episode of my friends new skit show is up. If we're being perfectly honest, I'm not that keen on the intro so start here and enjoy!
  • Suturing a Grape - tiny, delicate, robot hands suture up a grape skin. I believe a human doctor is driving this thing but you can easily foresee a future where these little nanobots take care of us. We're basically indestructible now.
  • Guy talking Sh*t to a possum - I'm not a possum hater. I think they can be cute in their own way. Despite that opinion, this guy talking shit at one is pretty funny.
  • Edubb - Whooty - apparently this is what my girlfriend listens to at work all day. She really leads a secret life. ;)
  • Tim & Eric - Music is Four Songs - when you hear that Dell, you know.
  • Spoon - Inside Out - slow panning Spoon music video goodness.
Have a great weekend. There's more awkward treats awaiting you here.

It's May. In New York this means 50 degree temperatures. Can't say I'm a fan. Regardless, lots of travel coming up this month to some warmer regions. Looking forward to some legit spring!
  • Cat Riding Magic Carpet (A Whole New World) - I neglected to include this video last week and, frankly, it's one of those classics that delights at any time. Watch it twice.
  • Tidal - End The Suffering - only the British could properly pull of this little skewering. It's pretty much impossible for mega-rich people to undertake schemes to become more mega-rich without looking like a buncha jerks.
  • Dog in a fountain - Spring. This is how I wanna feel.
  • RATATAT - CREAM ON CHROME - apparently these fluorescent lights were developed by Anamanaguchi.. nice effect. Great to hear RATATAT return.
  • MLC 2012 - Competitive juggling championships. I can say no more.
  • Best News Bloopers 80s and 90s - News bloopers are choice but vintage design bloopers are just slightly better.
Have a great weekend. Get outside!

Animation Sequence Project

posted April 21, 2015 #

It's unfortunate that the Animation Sequence Project embeds their submissions so tiny because the concept is great. Ask anyone with animation, video or art skills to create a 10 second animation that begins and ends with a 250x250 square dead center. That's the only requirement and it allows every animation to be linked together, despite being entirely unrelated.

The above embeds two pages of submissions but there are tons more.

Tomorrow is Record Store Day - a celebration of independent record stores (and an effort to raise capital for physical media). So, make an effort to drop by one of your local record stores if you have one and stare at all the folks crazed with vinyl fever. Or, better yet, join them. If you find yourself in need of entertainment this weekend, gaze upon the Men's Hairstyles Club. You're welcome.

Big week this week - namely in the release of that Makeup and Vanity Set record, Wilderness. I promise to stop talking about it so much but I'm happy to announce that the first run of the vinyl has already Sold Out. That's a helluva accomplishment in my opinion and I'm hoping we push forward to a second run. If you need further convincing beyond my gushing, read these reviews - that should do it. And now, on to the videos...
  • Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 4 - I know this made the rounds last week but I'm still obsessed with it. The previous episodes were good but this is next level greatness.
  • Penicillin Baby - Stick It Out - Nashville band that's been good for some time but they've just released this weird video and are going on tour. Hoping for good things from them.
  • Stairway To Stardom (1988) - Horowitz & Spector "Boiled Chicken" - This is but one entry in the spellbinding collection of Stairway to Stardom courtesy of Network Awesome. Many thanks to Paige for the existence of this wonderful little spot on the Internet.
  • The very BEST of TAMMY Chelcie Lynn - I posted an out-of-context clip from Chelcie Lynn last week and soon learned that her hilarious redneck character is, indeed, intentional. I'm a bit bummed to be in on the secret but happy there's so much more of her absurdity to see.
  • Real Life Batsuit: Combat Armor - This guy built a real life Batsuit and uses this video to show it off. I'm all for earnestness and accomplishing personal projects but there's something about this video that is perfectly amusing. I'm sure they are aware of a man fast punching at a person's stomach is a classic comedy trope. Well done Bat fan.
  • Ethnic Zorigoo ft Zaya - Mongolian throat rapping. It's a thing and I love it.
  • mooney's minutes - nice dose of Kyle Mooney from 2013. You needed a little awkward in your weekend.
If you haven't seen this teaser for Eidolon, get into it. Joey did a great job. Speaking of teasers.. how about this True Detective Season 2 preview... not sure what to think!

Have a great weekend, whenever you read this.

Lots going on this week! Namely, more goodness from Makeup and Vanity Set. Really excited for Wilderness to be released next week. I know everyone is gonna love it.
  • mirror. - big thanks to Chris for reminding me how weird the Internet can be (delightfully).
  • Y'all got a cigarette? - Is this real? Probably not. Do I care? Absolutely not.
  • Christopher G. Brown's Teletubbies Joy Division Edit - I ran across this late last week so it's probably old news to everyone but high-contrast, black-and-white Teletubbies set to Joy Division is awesomely scary.
  • AAA Teen Driving Distractions - do you have a child? Watch this and really bathe in the fear that one day this could be your kid. I've never seen a more effective campaign against texting and driving - this is it.
  • Viner baby dance loubia bled - this little dude is the BEST. via Becky.
  • Amazing Dancing Guy during Music Festival - pretty generic title but stick with it.. this dude has some serious moves. My favorite is what I call "Tiny Feet".
  • Drunk guy sings 'Bohemian Rhapsody' inside police car - you'd think this would be a sloppy clip of a drunk guy singing a part of the Queen classic but, nope, it's the entire song and it's actually pretty accurate. The man is a fan.
  • Raiders of the Lost Archives - apparently lots of the Lucas classic pairs up extremely well with several old adventure films and an old Scrooge McDuck comic. I had no idea. via Austin.
  • Cocktails & Dreams - Mike Upchurch took the Tom Cruise movie Cocktail, re-edited it as a sitcom and inserted new actors all over the place. It's actually brilliant (albeit a bit long) and I'd actually love to see this sort of thing become more of a reality. It's awkward but it works.
  • The Musical Chair - this is Art, right? Why am I drawn to this? I can't explain it but I watched the whole thing.
That's it! Have a great weekend and if you need some further distraction please queue up the Talking Heads Stop Making Sense and enjoy it from start to finish. It's a wonderful thing.

How's your week? Mine's been great. Maybe it's the season change but it seems like there's some serious optimism around these parts. Always good to take note of that feeling when you have it. But I digress! Enjoy these distracting videos.
  • Wilderness Promo One - I will continue to talk about this new Makeup and Vanity Set record, Wilderness, and the short film, Eidolon, it accompanies. Listen to Hand in Hand for a taste of what's to come.
  • Fritz Learns to Catch Compilation #1 - I was crying laughing while watching this. This poor dog has a heart of gold.
  • Puppy vs. Orange - at some point I found myself immersed in the world of Maymo and Penny, two adorable dogs having their antics posted to Youtube. I suggest you dive all the way in.
  • Subconscious Cinema - great compilation of dreams from a variety of movies. Be warned.. it does contain some graphic imagery. The clip from 'Un Chien Andalou' at 35seconds will haunt you. The rest is great.
  • Made By: Chris Coyier - I've been a huge fan of CSS Tricks for a long time and it's nice to hear this interview with Mr. Coyier. Seems like an incredibly awesome dude.
  • Album Covers Come Alive - this falls on the side of absurd and ridiculous but it's mostly impressive for it's sheer length. It's insane how much work was put into this!
  • TIE Fighter - I don't geek out on Star Wars fan creations that much but the artistic style of this short film is something I, personally, rarely see these days.
  • Darkel - L, 2014 - I don't know if you are familiar with Darkel, aka Jean-Benoit Dunckel, aka half of AIR - but I had forgotten about this project and was quite pleased to see this crazy long datamosh video pop up with his work (and a new EP).
Need more? Nerd out on this 1 Minute Physics Video about computer colors or this adorable Mom and Daughter Dance... you know, because Ellen.

Have a great weekend.

I've returned from Austin! It was 80 degrees and a wonderfully good time with the best of friends. Quite frankly, I didn't even see that much but I've been going for 10 years, so I don't feel like I missed much either.

Because I didn't browse that much, this weeks playlist is just a mish mash of random videos we watched while drinking on the porch. Best way to discover new videos. Many of these are old but new to me, that's all that matters. Thanks to Paige, Kevin, Chris and Mac for the goodies. Glad to be back. Lots of good news on the horizon.

Two Old Men

posted March 12, 2015 #

I should absolutely save this for Friday Videos but I'm loving it way too much to keep it to myself for any longer. The premise is simple - two old men sitting around chatting about whatever nonsense. The execution may take a certain someone to really get it tho. Those of us that grew up in the South or went to Church regularly mostly definitely encountered individuals like this. It is, for me, hysterically perfect. So far there are only two episodes but I have the highest of hopes for more.
  • Christmas - two old men chat about their Christmas time.
  • Health Scare - two old men chat about a recent health scare.
Many thanks to Josh Stafford (aka Shaboi) and Gabe McCauley for being these Old Men.

I'm not fully convinced my experiment was a successful one. I actually missed seeking out things to write about and posting about them - even if my pessimistic self doesn't think my writeups are really worth your time. I gotta do me for me, ya know?

Anyway, here's a playlist of distracting and amusing greatness. As usual, enjoy yourself.
  • Man keeps falling over while shoveling snow - I saw this in gif form yesterday and absolutely lost it. Is it fake? I choose not to wonder and embrace the insanity of it. Please watch at least 10x.
  • Sleater-Kinney - A New Wave - I don't have a terribly strong opinion about the song but I love seeing a good crossover between pop culture items, especially when it involves Bob's Burgers.
  • A Dog's Snow Day - strap a GoPro to a little pup and let them frolick in the snow. Imagine this when you've got your VR glasses strapped to your head.
  • Chmielewski Fun Time! - There's something strangely alluring about this dance. She isn't going bonkers but she is into it.
  • Freaks and Geeks - Uptown Funk - it doesn't sync up very well at all but Bill's dance is always worth a rewatch.
  • Garth Brooks First Facebook Post - the earnestness of this is way too much. God bless ya Garth but settle down!
  • Natalie Prass - Why Don't You Believe In Me - really enjoying this record and the simplicity and effectiveness of this video is spot on.
  • The Golden Egg - Short - a man by the name of Dave Cloud passed away this week. He was a Nashville gem - a strange character with a penchant for the audacious. He lived hard but made some truly excellent music. This short film showcases his personality pretty well - hard to understand and absolutely hilarious if you really get it.
If you still need more entertainment I dare you to watch this without skipping. No way you can do it.

Have a great weekend. Stay warm.
