An internet waystation.

it me - michael eades

👋 Hi, I'm Michael Eades; a long time Internet dweller, design dabbler, dangerously amateur developer, online social experimenter and frequent curator.

Currently working as VP of Product at Smarter Apps. I also keep the lights on at a boutique record label called yk records, a podcast network called We Own This Town and a t-shirt shop called Nashville Galaxy. Previously, I built things for Vimeo OTT, VHX, KNI and Spongebath Records.

This site is an archive of ephemera I find entertaining; tweets, videos, random links, galleries of images.

contact

Reach out via threads or good ole email if you have anything to discuss. I do my best to reply in a timely manner.

for the record: "yewknee" is a nonsensical word with no literal meaning but a unsurprisingly nerdy etymology. It is pronounced, "yoo • knee."

ongoing projects

yk Records →
started in 2009 as a conduit for music that friends had no plans on releasing. now it's a full fledged boutique label focused on releasing quality music from a variety of styles. you know, like a label does. Here's a sampler on Soundcloud and a different one on Spotify. Options.

We Own This Town →
Originally a Nashville area music blog, this site has grown into a full blown podcast network as of 2018. It's an attempt to bring together creative folks about a variety of interesting topics.

I host this show all about Nashville local music outside the expectations of the city. I'm biased but all the shows are good.

Nashville Galaxy →
An online t-shirt shop featuring beloved and defunct Nashville area businesses. Very niche audience on this one but I tend to think niche is good.

some noteworthy other things

Chris Gaines: The Podcast →
published along with co-host Ashley Spurgeon; a limited series podcast that takes an absurdly researched deep dive into the time that Garth Brooks took on a fictional personality named Chris Gaines.

Garth Brooks Chris Gaines Countdown →
to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the time Garth Brooks took on the fictional personality Chris Gaines and appeared on Saturday Night Live in character, I GIF'ed the entire episode. It's a lot of GIFs; please use them.

Whiskerino →
a social network built around communal beard growing for four months. yes, it was as weird as it sounds but equally fascinating and enjoyable.

Moustache May →
an offshoot of the beard growing contest mentioned above. equal amounts of oddball fun but only a month long.

Summer Mix Series →
before all music was streaming everywhere, Internet music fans would swap zip files of music. it was truly a strange and wonderful time.

A Conversation with John Hodgman about 'Dune,' Pt. 1

Not sure why I find this so interesting but I do!

Rosaleen Norton, 'the witch of Kings Cross'

really interesting read on a self-identifying witch and progressive bohemian. There's also a documentary of the same title I will be partaking in.

We’ve Got A File On You: They Might Be Giants

Stereogum series based on "acting gigs, guest appearances, random internet ephemera, etc." Fun to hear them talk about some of the variety of their work.

Have Single-Page Apps Ruined the Web?

Nice chat about “Transitional Apps” with Rich Harris from NYTimes. I don’t really call myself a developer anymore, largely because SPAs are so mysterious to me. This sounds so much better.

The mystery of the "same sky" postcards

Vox coming with the fascinating story yet again. A small and strange tale but compelling for sure.

The fascinating history of cemeteries

Educational *and* entertaining; win win

Albertus: Directed by John Carpenter

A lovely essay about the usage of Albertus in a number of Carpenter films. It’s the kind of quality nerding out the Internet was made for.
For many, many years I used to compile a Halloween mix. I made a lot of them. A whole whole lot. It was a natural progression but I eventually shifted to making these mixes for my We Own This Town: Music podcast. I'm happy to say, the latest edition is now available.
As it is a podcast, there is some talking at the top but then it's just a solid 45 minutes of Halloween themed tracks. They're all musicians from the Nashville area so you may not be familiar with any of the names but I think you'll find it to be a pleasing listen.

At the very least, I implore you to listen to the first 30 seconds... I really went whole hog on the spooky intro.
  1. Wallis Allen - “Playing In The Dark”
  2. PETTY - “Dracula”
  3. Shaboi - “Undead Headcheck”
  4. The Phantoms Of Saturn - “Night Of The Lycan”
  5. Spoken Nerd - “Power Walker”
  6. Boo Dudes - “The Pumpkin Stomp”
  7. The Dead Deads - “Murder Reprise”
  8. Makeup And Vanity Set - “Hellraiser”
  9. Emmett Brown - “A Dark Visage”
  10. V To Z - “Daughters of Decay”
  11. Blavery - “Midnight Bass Ghost”
  12. Black Caverns - “This Can’t Be the End”
  13. Bad Luck Matress - “Protoplasmic Pillars”
  14. Children Of The Night - “The Silent Chamer”
I was recently a guest DJ over on WXNA with my buddy Cody Newman as a substitute DJ for regular host Brandon Spencer.
You can hear the song selections we put together for the show over here. We are never explicit about it on the show but the entire playlist does have a continuity to it. Can you figure it out?

Over at yk Records today we released two new singles from Jasmin Kaset. She introduced these songs to me back in 2019 with a plan to release them in early 2020 but a little pandemic got in the way and they've been on hold ever since. But no more!
The tracks - "Have You Met Me Yet?" and "I Will Never Let You Go From Me" - were both staples of her live set at the time of recording. Even though it's been awhile since they've been heard live, they hold up wonderfully. I'm very biased of course but I love them both.

The Nashville Scene premiered the official video for "Have You Met Me Yet?" and you can watch it on their site or over on YouTube. It's like a fun, lo-fi, horror movie and it's perfect for October.

One of the reasons for the delay was that I could never get the artwork for the release to a place that I was happy with. Jasmin had sent me these amazing images from Bill Reynolds that paid homage to late 80's tech magazines from Yugoslovia (specifically Računari) and all my attempts felt insufficient. Fortunately, I was able to get Version Industries to put something together and the results are fantastic.

I also really wanted to treat this release as something special because it had been waiting to be released for so long. So, I had a handful of copies pressed up to lathe cut 7" vinyl. We made 20 copies and they sold out instantly. Maybe I'll make more?

That's a lot of writing about 2 new songs but these have been on my brain for almost two years. It feels great to get them out into the world and even better to see that everyone is loving them. As they should.

It's exclusive to Bandcamp until October 22nd when it hits streaming services. This was done intentionally to create a window to urge folks to buy the music. I know MP3s are passé but Jasmin certainly deserves the support.

TLDR: two new songs. Enjoy.

The Universe May Have Never Begun, Physicists Say

A theory beyond my feeble comprehension. I'm a linear time kinda guy.

Nothing Is Easy Enough

likely not of much intrigue to those outside of Nashville but quite an entertaining read for anyone that was concerned with local music in the late 90s

Makeup and Vanity Set - Zytel Systems: System I - Horror

created in 2017, MAVS crafted a new song every day for the month of October themed around a particular horror movie. Now, in 2021, he's released them on Bandcamp. Excellent listen.

Jim Guthrie - Bleak Sword (Original Score)

have not played the accompanying indie game but the soundtrack works quite well on its own. Came out in 2019 but new to me.

New Bang - Stoned God

sampled tiki hip-hop; a sub-genre that you did not know existed but has wonderful results

"Lets finally talk about how NFTs are a giant scam. (1/) ????"

really enjoyed this NFT rant. I think the conversation is a bit more nuanced than this but, on the whole, I agree.

Louie Zong - gators

another EP of tunes from Zong; this one inspired by NOLA music, the meters, professor longhair, allen toussaint, etc
Quality content right here.

Heidi Klum Halloween

reminder, take a deep dive on Heidi Klum's Halloween outfits. A real treat.

Vintage Obscura Halloween 2021 -- Side A

it's that time of year again! the label is right on the tin; a compilation of vintage, obscure tunes ready for your Spooky enjoyment.

Just rewatched this recently and did not know about the original ending. Much preferred.
