An internet waystation.

it me - michael eades

👋 Hi, I'm Michael Eades; a long time Internet dweller, design dabbler, dangerously amateur developer, online social experimenter and frequent curator.

Currently working as VP of Product at Smarter Apps. I also keep the lights on at a boutique record label called yk records, a podcast network called We Own This Town and a t-shirt shop called Nashville Galaxy. Previously, I built things for Vimeo OTT, VHX, KNI and Spongebath Records.

This site is an archive of ephemera I find entertaining; tweets, videos, random links, galleries of images.

Reach out via threads or good ole email if you have anything to discuss. I do my best to reply in a timely manner.

for the record: "yewknee" is a nonsensical word with no literal meaning but a unsurprisingly nerdy etymology. It is pronounced, "yoo • knee."

ongoing projects

yk Records →
started in 2009 as a conduit for music that friends had no plans on releasing. now it's a full fledged boutique label focused on releasing quality music from a variety of styles. you know, like a label does. Here's a sampler on Soundcloud and a different one on Spotify. Options.

We Own This Town →
Originally a Nashville area music blog, this site has grown into a full blown podcast network as of 2018. It's an attempt to bring together creative folks about a variety of interesting topics.

I host this show all about Nashville local music outside the expectations of the city. I'm biased but all the shows are good.

Nashville Galaxy →
An online t-shirt shop featuring beloved and defunct Nashville area businesses. Very niche audience on this one but I tend to think niche is good.

some noteworthy other things

Chris Gaines: The Podcast →
published along with co-host Ashley Spurgeon; a limited series podcast that takes an absurdly researched deep dive into the time that Garth Brooks took on a fictional personality named Chris Gaines.

Garth Brooks Chris Gaines Countdown →
to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the time Garth Brooks took on the fictional personality Chris Gaines and appeared on Saturday Night Live in character, I GIF'ed the entire episode. It's a lot of GIFs; please use them.

Whiskerino →
a social network built around communal beard growing for four months. yes, it was as weird as it sounds but equally fascinating and enjoyable.

Moustache May →
an offshoot of the beard growing contest mentioned above. equal amounts of oddball fun but only a month long.

Summer Mix Series →
before all music was streaming everywhere, Internet music fans would swap zip files of music. it was truly a strange and wonderful time.

On this day in 1995, the Chris Farley movie Tommy Boy was released. Let this serve as a reminder that in 2018, Dave Paulson released a concept album about the entire movie. It's a track-by-track retelling but it also gets to the emotional core of the movie. In short, it's fantastic.
There's a great intro video explaining the whole record and a fun video for "Don't Let It Get You Down" - one of my personal faves from the record.

Tommy Boy director Peter Segal enjoyed it, as did Consequence of Sound, The AV Club, Ain't It Cool News and even FastCompany.

Everything you need to know about the record is on the official site sanduskyoh.co, there's a twitter for the album at @SanduskyAlbum, you can buy it on Bandcamp or stream it wherever.

I'm biased but I do recommend getting it into your life.

Foo Fighters - 328 Performance Hall, Nashville, TN (20/04/1995)

I was at this show in 1995 when I was 16 and, somehow, it was bootlegged, digitized and survives on YouTube. Internet is bonkers sometimes.

THE MOST INJURED MAN IN AMERICA

Seth Pomeroy has done approximately 40 of these commercials. I can watch this supercut anytime and always enjoy

Wordle for movie images. Like Heardle but more up my alley
I've been watching the Netflix documentary series The Andy Warhol Diaries. It's a pleasantly well-made six-part series about the artists life culled from the book of the same name, which was culled from morning conversations between Warhol and friend Pat Hackett. Each episode opens with a disclaimer that the voice of Andy Warhol heard in the series was generated by an AI, seeded by actual Warhol recordings and a little bit of Bill Irwin augmentation.

Hearing that Warhol has been recreated as a bit of a modern day robot is a nice reminder to spend some time cruising the Internet in search of information about the 1982 Andy Warhol Robot. Conceived as part of a "No-Man Show" intended for Broadway, Warhol worked with producer Lewis Allen and one-time Disney engineer Alvaro Villa to bring the entire project to life. 1985's Robots, machines in man's image described the show as such:
The robot will be seated on its bed in Warhol's rom, surrounded by its dog, a telephone, and two television sets. It will interact with these as well as with the audience. When a member of the audience asks a question, the robot will have five preprogrammed answers to choose from.
Not exactly compelling from a 2022 perspective but pretty novel for the mid-80s!

There are so many wonderful images and blurbs to discover about the project. I'll include a few below but I really can't recommend letting yourself have a deep dive at your earliest convenience.

24/7 stream of Euro-Disco, Synth-Pop & Dance Hits

My brain can not understand how this exists. What a repository.

Batman and Bill

apparently Bob Kane is not the sole creator of Batman. Bill Finger created... most of the entire Batman universe.

Dr. Andrew Huberman: The Science of Small Changes

Curious to listen to this as it came my way on a trusted recommendation. I am fascinated by caffeine and adenosine.

“Dr. Andrew Huberman shares the small behaviors that make a huge impact on your health, including how light affects your sleep and your energy levels, tips to control bad impulses, exercises to slow the aging process, and so much more.”

Blockchain + NFT Heists / Nightmare Alley by The Cross Cut

a podcast I enjoy talking about the blockchain, NFTs and the movie Nightmare Alley in a surprisingly contextualized manner. Bonus, my ex-VHX co-workers who started the GAWDS NFT project all make an appearance. Very interesting stuff regardless of how you feel about NFTs.

Tumblr Shop

TIL that Tumblr has a shop and many of items have almost no branding; just pizza and aliens. Approved.

How WordPress and Tumblr are keeping the internet weird

massive interview with Matt Mullenweg of Automattic and I'm now over the moon about them as a company. Smitten!

The Tan Side Of Lonesome

"contemporary-country-meets-Italian-disco-meets-synth-pop pastiche" and it's GOOD

Chris Vandersall's Advertising Buffoonery And That One Xcel Energy Project

rarely do I encounter a *writer's* website primarily aimed at advertising campaigns and actually leave entertained. Vandersall apparently works on the StreetEasy campaigns; which are always a delight

YĪN YĪN - The Rabbit That Hunts Tigers

ran across this on Youtube. Took a few tracks for it to hit me but when it did, it hit good. Recommended.

TikTok launches a music distribution platform, SoundOn

Competitor to DistroKid and TuneCore. I don’t personally need this at this time but it’s great to see more options in this space. The deal terms are stellar too. Is there a hidden catch??

Box Office Game

good lord this is both daunting and enjoyable

The Lazy Eyes - Where's My Brain???

give it 34 seconds, that should be sufficient to entice you for the full 7 minutes

Where does Tumblr go from here?

an extremely long take on the foibles of Tumblr and what might be next. I would contend that if you're in need of inspiration; there's still no better destination than Tumblr.
Been enjoying a browse through the works of Lauren Gregory; a nice blend of paintings, animations, mixed media and some fascinating hybrids of all of the above. You may have encountered her work via the Toro y Moi video for "Rose Quartz" but there's plenty more to see.

Nashville's Red Arrow Gallery is showing an exhibit of her work during March of 2022, so if you get the opportunity to swing by... you should.

TV Torso - My Fair Baby's Coming for Me

still a highly underrated band. wish they still made music.

Rockwell Retro Encabulator

watch this and delight in the jargon. further treats await with some googling but I won't spoil it. Just enjoy.

Gato Roboto

such a fan of this art style. may have to play this!
I commented on this ever so briefly on Twitter but Bandcamp recently announced that they are being acquired by Epic Games. In the words of Andy Baio, I didn't see this one coming.

I've been championing the Bandcamp since 2008 and they've pretty much never disappointed with the services they offer and their "artist first" mentality. In a world of streaming services that treat music as a meaningless commodity, it always seemed like Bandcamp did the opposite and managed to be socially active with Bandcamp Fridays, Juneteenth fundraising, Transgender Law Center fundraising, and more. To be perfectly succinct about it, they've always acted like they kind of company you want companies to act like.

The Epic Games acquisition doesn't necessarily signal the death knell for the service. It's entirely possible that they will be infused with a lot of capital which will allow them to grow into more artist-first services and expand upon what they already have. Historically that's not really how it goes but it is possible.

As I've been a fan of the service for over a decade, I am cautiously optimistic that this decision was not made lightly and that they have a sensible plan for how to proceed. I'm mostly just baffled because everything I've read about Bandcamp is that they are a profitable company. Isn't that the end goal of any business? Be profitable and continue to be profitable. The idea that growth is the primary goal for all things just feels overly capitalistic; a mindset that I never saw exhibited by the service previously.

Here's to cautious optimism and hoping that history does not repeat itself. All we can do now is wait and see. :fingerscrossed:

Bandcamp is Joining Epic Games

honestly speechless. Gonna take a bit to let this sink in and form an opinion.

Nova

Panic makes a code editor that isn't Coda; news to me! I have been using Atom for years and am in the market for something new. Gonna give it a whirl.

New Bang - Ultimate Tiki Beach Breaks

hip-hop breaks plus tiki vibes. stoked for this.

US’s Netflix to be forced to broadcast Putin propaganda

Not really “forced”- the headline makes Netflix sound like a victim instead of a willing partner. Capitalism knows no bounds. Gross.
