An internet waystation.

it me - michael eades

👋 Hi, I'm Michael Eades; a long time Internet dweller, design dabbler, dangerously amateur developer, online social experimenter and frequent curator.

Currently working as VP of Product at Smarter Apps. I also keep the lights on at a boutique record label called yk records, a podcast network called We Own This Town and a t-shirt shop called Nashville Galaxy. Previously, I built things for Vimeo OTT, VHX, KNI and Spongebath Records.

This site is an archive of ephemera I find entertaining; tweets, videos, random links, galleries of images.

contact

Reach out via threads or good ole email if you have anything to discuss. I do my best to reply in a timely manner.

for the record: "yewknee" is a nonsensical word with no literal meaning but a unsurprisingly nerdy etymology. It is pronounced, "yoo • knee."

ongoing projects

yk Records →
started in 2009 as a conduit for music that friends had no plans on releasing. now it's a full fledged boutique label focused on releasing quality music from a variety of styles. you know, like a label does. Here's a sampler on Soundcloud and a different one on Spotify. Options.

We Own This Town →
Originally a Nashville area music blog, this site has grown into a full blown podcast network as of 2018. It's an attempt to bring together creative folks about a variety of interesting topics.

I host this show all about Nashville local music outside the expectations of the city. I'm biased but all the shows are good.

Nashville Galaxy →
An online t-shirt shop featuring beloved and defunct Nashville area businesses. Very niche audience on this one but I tend to think niche is good.

some noteworthy other things

Chris Gaines: The Podcast →
published along with co-host Ashley Spurgeon; a limited series podcast that takes an absurdly researched deep dive into the time that Garth Brooks took on a fictional personality named Chris Gaines.

Garth Brooks Chris Gaines Countdown →
to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the time Garth Brooks took on the fictional personality Chris Gaines and appeared on Saturday Night Live in character, I GIF'ed the entire episode. It's a lot of GIFs; please use them.

Whiskerino →
a social network built around communal beard growing for four months. yes, it was as weird as it sounds but equally fascinating and enjoyable.

Moustache May →
an offshoot of the beard growing contest mentioned above. equal amounts of oddball fun but only a month long.

Summer Mix Series →
before all music was streaming everywhere, Internet music fans would swap zip files of music. it was truly a strange and wonderful time.

Kate Berlant Plays the Fool

Great insight on the enjoyable improviser and her new special, Kate (which I did not know existed until right now!).

Never forget that this little NYC island has its own pneumatic trash system!

US installs record solar capacity as prices keep falling

“It's often cheaper to build and run solar than to buy gas for an existing plant.”

That sub headline is, hopefully, the turning point we need.

Been thinking about getting into hats. This seems like an excellent place to start.

Apollo Up! @ DRKMTTR 18 September 2022

Apollo Up does not play often anymore. but when they do, it packs a punch. Glad this performance was captured in full.
When my friends at the Devalued podcast wanted to start a show discussing the difficult relationship between art and money, I was all for it. Artists of all flavors rarely get to talk about these topics out in the open and it's better for everyone if the hardships of being a creative person are laid out there. For their sixth episode, they managed to land a chat with legendary recording engineer Steve Albini.
Albini has always made himself very accessible. His Chicago studio Electrical Audio is not overpriced in a way that only giant artists can work with him - even though he's worked with the likes of Nirvana, Pixies, The Breeders, PJ Harvey. His insights into the benefits of recording in a studio, the strength of community he witnessed back in the early punk days and the troubled relationship between art and commerce are wonderfully insightful.

For just six episodes, the show has managed to nab a lot of great guests. Highly recommend you subscribe and listen to the backlog.

‘Gifs are cringe’: how Giphy’s multimillion-dollar business fell out of fashion

My favorite takeaway from this piece is that GIFs are effective when they are outside the realm of copyright. Giphy struggles b/c it can’t mainstream IP violation.

Skew for After-Effects

I don’t even use After Effects but this demo is awesome. So fluid and sensible!

Ethereum completes ambitious shift to proof of stake

Look, I don't care that much about cryptocurrency but I have to say it feels good to see this kind of change that is tackling one of their biggest issues. It doesn't make crypto less of a grift but it does make it slightly less harmful (I hope).

Adobe to Acquire Figma

wild! not entirely unexpected but still wild.

The new Verge redesign

Inspiring me to finally finish the yk redesign

‎Who designed this poster?

Letterbox list of intriguging, weird, inspiring film posters. I don't care for all of them myself but still some worthwhile views here.

Beatles' 'Revolver' Remix Wouldn't Be Here Without Peter Jackson

Very interesting read about Jackson's demixing technologies. Honestly, it sounds a bit fishy to me. Is the end result AI / ML filling in blanks or are these the honest recordings the band made?
Way back in January of 2021, I started working with Beth Cameron to re-issue the second Forget Cassettes record, Salt (originally released 2006 by Theory 8 Records). Truth be told, it's my favorite of the FC records and it was the only one remaining that did not exist on vinyl. So, we took to the task. It took far longer than expected but I am pleased to finally announce that the records are done, in my possession and now available for sale.
We started by getting the original premaster mixes from Jeremy Ferguson at Battle Tapes, got John Baldwin at Infrasonic Sound to master the record (and the b-sides) for vinyl and I reached out to the original packaging artist Nick Butcher at Sonnenzimmer for advice on how to remaster the artwork from CD scans to LP size. We submitted the project for production in September of 2021 and have been waiting (and waiting and waiting) ever since. The first round of test pressings came in February but they were rejected. The second round was accepted but pushed our production schedule even further out.

All told, the records arrived at the end of August. Almost a full year just to get the records manufactured and over a year and a half for the project as a whole.

None of that speaks to the creation of the music itself. I've only been involved in getting these wonderful songs from their recorded state into a physical format. Beth and her band - Aaron Ford & Jay Leo Phillips - did an unspeakably great job with the album. It's sixteen years old now but it packs every bit of punch and raw emotion it did when it was released.

It's been a long trip but I'm happy with the results. I hope you'll consider giving it a listen or pickup up the vinyl on Bandcamp.

time to learn some new moves

Playing Janet Jackson’s ‘Rhythm Nation’ Can Crash Old Hard Drives

Just wild: "Microsoft shared details of a vulnerability in a widely used 5400-RPM laptop hard drive sold around 2005. Just by playing “Rhythm Nation” on or near a vulnerable laptop, the disk can crash and take its laptop down with it. The flaw is due to the fact that “Rhythm Nation” inadvertently produces one of the natural resonant frequencies created by the movement in the hard drive."

Girl Tones - Got It (Live on Lost River Sessions)

caught this band last week and quite enjoyed. Looking for studio recordings but this live performance captures what they do quite well.

The latest yk Records release was put out into the world today. The sophomore album from The Medium, For Horses, is now streaming everywhere or available on limited edition vinyl (or digital download, or CD).
Bandcamp once described the band as "woozy psych-pop hat draws on the sound of the ’60s." That's absolutely true and likely even moreso with this new album. If you've been listening to them for any amount of time, this record is clearly an effort to stretch and evolve into new territory without losing sight of what they do best (lotsa harmonies).

Personally, I'm really partial to the classic sounds of "Don't Stay Out, the wonderful melancholy of "No Highway Cowboys," and the absurdity of "Space Horse." I'm certainly biased about the record but if you're a fan of 60's pop/rock bands, I am confident this is up your alley.

Hear it on Bandcamp or your favorite streamer.

Side note, I am very proud of this insane announcement gif

Rich Ruth - Desensitization and Reprocessing (Live)
