Friday Videos - Jan 6th, 2012
It may be a new year but the format hasn't changed - another weekly dose of videos for ya. Here's the
playlist. Enjoy!
- Mannings Plus Cat Quest - maybe you've seen some awesome commercials in your day but this one will now reign supreme above all others. via wiseacre.
- Beard Punch - I try to stray from the Beard related content these days but this is too ridiculous to miss. You know what's coming but it's still great when it happens.
- Doakes throws Dexter a surprise party - some NSFW language in this 5 second clip but, from what I hear, it's better than the entire last season of the show.
- Cat attacks singing card - the ferocity involved with the attack (especially the second one) is the perfect representation of how we all feel when encountering these kinds of cards.
- Gymkata - Kurt Thomas is three time world gymnastics champion... and a fighting force not to be messed with. His combination of fighting and gymnastics creates a whole new form of karate - Gymkata. Go ahead and queue up the whole movie for your weekend pleasure. via Joey.
- Thin Lizzy vs Pixies - The Boys Are Back in Heaven - in remembrance of Phil Lynott's death this week in 1986 please take a moment to enjoy this perfect mash-up. via Paul.
- Harrison Ford watches Indy for the First Time - for whatever reason, Harrison Ford has never watched the Indiana Jones films. This video captures him screening the films for the first time. Brought to you by the same quality source as Alien Autopsy and Michael Jackson's Ghost videos.
- Green Goblin Makeup Test - turns out the Willem Dafoe Green Goblin from the 2002 Spider-man could have looked a lot more like the comic book version. In proper nerd lamenting style, I wish it had gone this way.
- Conspiracy Theory Rock - a 1998 Robert Smigel TV Funhouse that only aired once and has been removed from all later airings. While it's certainly not Ace & Gary style funny, it is phenomenal that this was ever put on TV. Glad it found a new home online.
- Noel Fielding's Luxury Comedy - best known for his work in The Mighty Boosh, Noel Fielding has his own sketch comedy show coming up on E4. I'll reserve judgment until I've seen it but I'm fairly confident it's going to be beyond weird. Maybe Richard Ayoade can be the balancing force of sanity without Julian Barratt but it's unlikely.
- Chevy Cocaine Bopp - take the cocaine snorting of Chevy Chase in Modern Problems, combine it with some freestyle dancing and - viola! - Internet gold.
If you're still in need of entertainment head over to
Funny or Die and catch up on their "
Spring 1986 TV Line-Up" series that's going on.
Buildings,
Prairie Children and
Cop-Puter are good places to start.
Have a great weekend!

Submarine: Richard Ayoade
Richard Ayoade is one of those people that I've yet to see anything from that I didn't love. His work on Garth Marengi, Man to Man, Nathan Barley, Mighty Boosh, IT Crowd and various directorial undertakings have all been solid treats. So, with all that in mind I was quite shocked and somewhat excited to see that he's directed his first feature length film -
Submarine. The script is based on the Joe Dunthorne novel of the same name and is, apparently, "a coming of age comedy set in Swansea following 15 year old Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) through the impending break-up of his parents’ marriage and his first relationship." Something tells me that such a description sells it a bit short and that it will likely have some interesting narrative devices at its fingertips (ala
Bunny and the Bull).
Looks like the Weinstein Company has already picked the film up for North American distribution so keep your eyes peeled for trailers and opening showtimes.

Journey Of The Childmen
Journey of the Childmen is a 'road movie' documentary following The Mighty Boosh during their
Future Sailors tour. It's safe to say that without seeing a lick of footage that I'm completely intrigued and curious to see it.. but since there's a
great trailer to watch I don't even have to go down that path. It looks great through and through. The DVD isn't due until November and that may not even be in the States but I'm hoping there are alternative ways to see it.
Once you've watched
the trailer I suggest reading through this
great interview with director Oliver Ralfe as it has some amazing quotes.
MC: I love that moment where Noel is expressing his frustration about sandwiches. He’s sick of sandwiches. The film already had a sort of “Spinal Tap” vibe to it, but that just took it to the next level.
OR: I’m glad you liked that! I think they were a bit worried…they’re worried that the film is basically just them complaining about sandwiches.
MC: If you knew nothing about Boosh, you’d really think you were watching a movie about rock stars. A rock band. They’re treated like rock stars, they dress like rock stars - well, Noel Fielding dresses like a rock star. Julian dresses like -
OR: Julian looks and dresses like a very elegant coal miner.
I'll be keeping an eye out for it and I suggest you do as well.
Many thanks to
Mikesell for the heads up.

Bunny and The Bull
After
first hearing about the
Paul King directed movie
Bunny and The Bull I was curious if I'd ever actually get to see.. as he is mostly known for his work on The Mighty Boosh and the notion of US distribution seemed slim. Fortunately, thanks to the power of the underground Internets, I procured a copy and watched it this weekend. It is, without a doubt, the most visually engaging film I've watched this year. Much of my enjoyment of it stems from the Gondry-esque style execution of special effects; lots of stop motion, projected images, surreal settings treated entirely naturally, etc. It's
great.
The acting is perfectly British and contained all the dry humor I have come to expect and enjoy so much from that crew of comedians. The story, at its core, is nothing new but it's the presentation and the journey throughout that makes it so compelling. I'd suggest you watch some
YouTube clips from it but, really, why spoil it? Just find yourself a copy and partake in the whole thing.

The Mighty Boosh App: The Mighty Decider
The Mighty Boosh have released an official iPhone app called
The Mighty Decider that, in theory, helps you make decisions when stuck in rut. In truth, it's just an amusing click through of a bunch of favored Boosh characters saying new and amusing things. Is it worth $1? That all depends on your level of Boosh enjoyment.

Future Sailors
Just in time for the impending holidays,
The Mighty Boosh have released a brand new tour DVD entitled
Future Sailors. This is the second in a, hopefully ongoing, series of documentation of their live stage show. You can watch
the trailer to get an idea of whats in store but personally I think you'll be spoiling some good surprises. I don't think the
DVD is Region 1 friendly but there are ways around that. Whatever needs to be done to see this, you should partake.

The Bunny and The Bull
Paul King is best known for directing episodes of
The Mighty Boosh but he's had a movie in the works for some time.
The Bunny and the Bull is set for release in late November in the UK and looks like all the tricks / aesthetic of The Boosh have been translated to the big screen. I'm looking forward to this one to say the least.
If anyone runs into anymore clips be sure to let me know, I'm rather curious to see more.

Mighty Boosh Figures
Against my better judgment I'm very tempted to order this new Pete Fowler set of
Mighty Boosh Figures. If they threw in a mystery
Tony Harrison or
Dennis The Shaman I'd be putting up whatever funds were necessary to make it happen.

British Invasion
What's going on?? Quality British TV seems to be slowly creeping its way into US territories. While I don't think it's necessarily going to take off in terms of popularity along the lines of 30 Rock or The Office I am still pleased that there are easy to obtain alternatives to the plethora of crap out there.
- The Mighty Boosh on Jimmy Fallon - with the release of all three seasons of their show on US DVD the Boosh guys are doing a little State-side promotion. They even do some crimping.
- Spaced on Hulu - Spaced! If you've not watched this series (featuring Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes and Nick Frost) I recommend you block off a large chunk of your weekend to catch up. It's the perfect balance of nerd-y references, late 20-somethings finding their way and British humour.

Adult Swim Lineup
Delocated, The Mighty Boosh, Check It Out, With Dr. Steve Brule
Thanks to
Joey for sending over the upcoming
Adult Swim lineup. It's nice to see that Venture Bros are coming back but it's especially pleasing to see that a number of new shows will be debuting.
- Delocated - a family in the witness protection agency decides to move to New York and be part of a reality show. Chris sent me the pilot and I'm hooked on the absurdity. Plus, Jon Glaser is quickly becoming someone that can do no wrong.
- The Mighty Boosh - finally a US channel showing one of my favorites. Maybe this means DVD's can be released on our side of the pond.
- Check It Out, With Doctor Steve Brule - the Tim & Eric show is extremely hit or miss for me but Steve Brule seems like a fitting spinoff.
The rest of the lineup looks good too - with the exception of
Drinky Crow. I love the
Tony Millionaire illustration style but the cartoon is just not good.
I had a surprising amount of things to say about the Adult Swim lineup huh? I had no idea...
