I Am Rich: The App

I Am Rich
The I Am Rich iPhone App is a hysterical and pointless piece of software that will cost you $999.99 and perform zero meaningful tasks. The red gem displayed on your iPhone is simply there to tell others that You Are Rich and have the kind of money to waste on pointless software. Sadly, the app has already been removed from the App Store but knowing that it was there for just a moment is good enough.

1000 Words Photography

1000 Words
Bryan clued me in to the online magazine 1000 Words Photography and I must thank him for it. Their current issue is an impressive collection of works from a variety of photographers. I particularly enjoyed the pieces from Olaf Otto Becker and Candida Hofer.

Once you've given that a proper browse I suggest checking out the magazines blog for more treats.

Catherine's Animals

Catherine's Animals
Many thanks to Lee for the heads up on Catherine's Animals - a very simple photo series showcasing animals and backdrops. Something about the minimal approach to everything gives it an almost catalog feel, like you're shopping for a Kangaroo or Llama. The Fox is still my favorite so far as I browse the in-depth archives - that solid stare is piercing.

Animals Worth Perusing

Fancy Panda
I've posted about Berkley Illustration before but it didn't get the proper love it deserves. It's probably still not getting enough attention. Well Dressed Animals, his Etsy Shop, his Flickr stream and anything else you can find need to be visually consumed. I mean, look at this Snow Owl or Smoking Panda - I don't care how hardened your heart is, you must appreciate those on some level.
RAWR
I know I shouldn't love it but I can't resist the Foe Paws t-shirt design, RAWR (and the GRRR! is nice too).
Spike
I can't possibly imagine anyone wearing this Troublemaker Tee but the image of Spike throwing down is pretty hilarious. In vaguely related news, Monsieur T released their Spring 08 line recently.. not a ton of stuff I love this time around but I appreciate the Still Digging and Cigarette Lungs designs.

10,000 BC - Mediocrity Abound

10,000 BC Movie
This weekend saw the release of 10,000 BC and while I should have known better, I went right away to see it. With promotion like "From the Directors of Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow" I was fully expecting an over-the-top, absurdly awesome tale of epic proportions. Conceptually, I was sold - a nomadic hunter works to save his tribe by battling oversized Sabre-Tooth Tigers, wrangling Wooly Mammoths and somehow taking down the founders of the Egyptian Empire. Oh, and there were some oddly evolved dinosaurs involved too. It should have been mindlessly fun but instead it was the picture perfect capture of mediocrity. It was never over the top fun but it was never too groaningly awful.

Though I will say that I give the writers credit for giving the protagonists educated yet stinted vocabularies. They had no word for "snow" but often spoke of "the prophecy." That's the sort of absurdity I enjoy most.

In summation (and no surprise to anyone, including myself), the movie is best saved for a Saturday afternoon viewing on TBS.

Just One Second...

I'm in transit today so no posts for a moment. However, here are some quick links to tide you over:

» Santa's Ghetto - art show in Bethlehem with a bunch of notable artists (Banksy did some new piece for this as I mentioned the other day). The site is terrible but the artwork is worth a gander.

» QOTSA Cooking - I've never heard of the Anthony Bourdain show but apparently he invited Queens of the Stone Age on to play some weird carols and add some strange atmosphere overall.

» Mark Mothersbaugh Rugs - his post Devo career is really proving to be pretty incredible. Be sure to check his site for loads more goodness.

» An Important Message From Conan O'Brien - what more needs to be said?

» Pop Junkie Winter Designs - just in time for your Christmas lists.. some new designs / gifts from Pop Junkie.

» Cars Converted Into Aquariums - whaa?

» 3D Drawing Pad - another fun little gift for your lists.

Take care.. be back soon.

Star Wars Baroque

Baroque Wars
It's hard to pick a favorite from this gallery of Star Wars illustrations done in a Baroque style. There are so many small details that make each one incredibly amusing (see: AT-ST curly feet, Storm Tropper crotch leaf, etc). Why there is no additional info about the gallery is beyond me but I'd love to see more work from this artist.

Friday Videos Holiday Spectacular - Dec 7th, 2007

AD/BC Full Special (click top left image panel to start)

The Mighty Boosh - "The Crack Fox"

Ad Exec

Tyson Montage - NSFW

Aquaman Dance Party - WTF?

T1000

"I don't think France is a country."

Vader Redub
The top two videos are full episodes and 110% worth watching. I realize not everyone has a spare 45 minutes lying around but please take time to watch them both at some point during the weekend. The GUBA video player controls are insane non-intuitive but it's the only place I could find the full episode.. turns out if you right-click the video you can play / pause at your leisure.

The Tyson clip is very NSFW but you have to see all the clips together.

The Vader Redux is a hilarious concept but waay too long. Do yourself a favor and stop watching it after about 30 - 40 seconds, you'll have the taste you need.

Enjoy your weekend.

Dinosaur Skin

Dinosaur
Unrelated Dinosaur
According to this there has been a partially mummified hadrosaur unearthed in North Dakota. Finding dinosaur remains is hardly something new but apparently this one had its skin / tissue partially preserved - providing new insight for future research and speculation on what the creatures may have actually looked like. Despite being a herbivore the creature is assumed to be far more muscular than originally thought.

Worth 1000 - Land vs Sea

Worth 1000 always has some sort of interesting Photoshop contest going on but I was particularly entertained by Surf and Turf - a contest in which the outcome is a new creature consisting of both Sea Creature and Land Animal. Most of them are ridiculous but sometimes they are almost believable. Almost.
