Intentional Artifacting
If you haven't seen it yet, this music video for the band Chairlift uses intentional video artifacting to create the 'hook' for their video. Meaning, it looks like a crappy Internet video but it's supposed to look that way. Apparently the new Kanye West video uses this trick as well.It should be noted that David O'Reilly has been doing this for some time and does not approve of calling the effect "data moshing" (nor do I.. ugh). That being said, it doesn't matter who came up with the technique or what it's officially called - just if it's used effectively or not. I'd venture to say that I never would have seen / heard Chairlift if this video didn't exist, so I'd call it a success.
