Moustache May - Done » Today marks the end of May and, thus, the end of another year of Moustache May. We had a great turnout this year and consistent high levels of participation - exactly what was desired. There were a few people that fell off that I was pretty disappointed to see go but thems the breaks! Tonight will be the Moustache May closing celebration at Mercy Lounge featuring Codaphonic, Ghostfinger and How I Became The Bomb. Bring your moustache! |
Uniqlo » The Uniqlo Paper site documents the paper catalogs of the Uniqlo design company and I must say.. it's quite nice. The interface is quick, intuitive and most of all - cleanly designed. The photography in the catalog is also quite nice. |
Some E-Cards » There are a ton of humorous e-cards available at Some E-Cards - some of which I have no idea when they'd be used. Ridiculous. Via Mason. Though nothing will top these cards - though they are much more in the offensive category than anything else. |
Mammatus Clouds » Mammatus Clouds look like they are straight out of a Super Mario Bros game.. hard to believe that's anywhere close to non-Photoshopped. |

White Rabbits » Awhile ago Janet tipped me off to this band White Rabbits, claiming that she couldn't stop listening to the album. Surprisingly, I have to agree with her. Rarely does it happen that someone suggests a band to me that I actually enjoy to the level of highly repeated listens. On first listen it's a well-written / performed indie rock record.. but upon further listens you pick up on little flourishes here and there that take it to the next level. Picking a song or two to showcase the record as a whole is a difficult task - as I enjoy it from start to finish. Regardless, download the following and let me know what you think. » White Rabbits - Kid On My Shoulders
» White Rabbits - I Used To Complain Now I Don't

The Strokes - new site and video » Typically a band releasing a new site that is relatively like their old one but done more professionally.. or releasing a new video for a song that's been out for awhile wouldn't be much news. However, I felt that the new video for "You Only Live Once" references some very interesting science-fiction and real science culture phenomena's and thus, was worth a mention. Just off the cuff I see references to: The Voyager Golden Record, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Cold War Mutual Assured Destruction, Star Trek User Interface Controls, LOST, and maybe even a little bit of Contact with that wormhole effect at the end. Am I reading too much into this or are The Strokes nerdier than they seem? |
Best Image Ever » Greatest Image Ever. Hands down. |
that's a photo?! » Terrace Rice Fields - unbelievable photography. As in, I can't believe that is actually a photo. |
Flight of the Conchords - Episode 1 » HBO has posted the entire first episode of their new series Flight of the Conchords online and it's pretty funny. The premise of two guys from New Zealand trying to make it in New York as a band leaves the show open to a variety of situations - the lo-fi music video shoot, the stalker fan, the Fleetwood Mac Love Triangle, etc. I believe this will be one to BitTorrent for future episodes... |
Surface » I recall a TED Talk that Landry had sent me showcasing an innovative interactive touch screen interface that seemed to be light years ahead of its time. I had a hard time believing that the interface was even developed vaguely and not just a conceptual video. Turns out Microsoft saw the same thing, snatched it up, and is calling it Surface. I'll be fully convinced of its awesomeness once I see it out and about in the real world but the demo videos on the site contain some great ideas (the food ordering / credit card payment especially) and are worth 10 - 15 minutes of your time. |
Google Maps - Street View » In case you somehow missed it yesterday, Google Maps launched a "Street View" option for San Francisco, Denver, Miami and New York. The results are pretty amazing. I recall A9 doing this awhile ago but it seems that they've dropped their map service entirely - and probably never implemented it quite as well as Google has. If you don't happen to live in any of the above cities you can still check out the new "Traffic View" that, somehow, shows good and bad traffic data. |
LAST.fm now owned by CBS » Wow, Last.FM just keeps climbing that ladder of goodness. First they made a deal with EMI to feature their music, then they announced a large video channel would be implemented on the site and now they've been bought by CBS. Typically a startup being purchased by a huge corporation is not something I would be so into (see Yahoo buys Flickr - though that did work out pretty well in the end) but it seems like they struck a deal in such a way that they will be able to exist independently of too much corporate muddle. Very cool.. now if places like VIRB would just start using Last.FM for their audio scrobbling instead of making their own version of it all the data could be centrally located! |

MAKE: How To Screenprint » I've had loads of people ask me how to get started with screenprinting and I usually direct them to Red Ink like Blood and their PDF Book "Reproguide" that is a nice step by step process (scroll to the bottom of the page). However, I may start suggesting people not only download that PDF for easy future reference but suggest that they watch this MAKE podcast that pretty much shows each step actually being performed. Granted, they are doing things in a pro printing shop and steps will have to be altered for the stay-at-home printer but it gives a great idea of what all is happening throughout the process. |
Vampire Fangs Tee » Art In The Age of Mechanical Reproduction has always had a plethora of hit or miss shirts (to me). The Abe / JFK hoodie is clever but shirts like this, this or this really don't do a whole lot for me. However, Vampire Fangs, More Scared of You and their logo tee are spot on t-shirt greatness. |
Hogzilla » I am at an extreme loss for words when it comes to describing this thing. I have heard tale of such giant beasts (aka "Hogzilla") but never actually seen photos. The fact that it produces between 500 and 700 pounds of sausage is both disgusting and impressive. |
BTSwarm » Btswarm is a tag cloud of popular torrent searches. I am vaguely surprised at the lack of pornographic search terms and completely unsurprised by the more popular terms (at this time: heroes, pirates of the caribbean, and dvdrip). |

Midwest Is Best » The portfolio / works of Mike Perry, aka Midwest Is Best, are pretty jaw droppingly great. The hand drawn typography is smart and well executed, the illustrations are compelling and the forthcoming book looks to be a must purchase. Great stuff to sink your teeth into for awhile. |
Pac Man Skeleton » This Pac Man Skeleton reminds me of the Michael Paulus Skeletal System installation that depicts popular cartoon / pop-culture characters and their skeletal systems. It'd be nice to see all of these in one gallery for a massive one-time showing. |
Culture Warrior Blog » I've been keeping an eye on the Culture Warrior blog lately for some good pop culture, political and musical postings. Our tastes differ in the music department from time to time but there is still plenty of good content to be had. |
Trent Reznor Interview » Even if you're not a fan of his music, this Trent Reznor interview is pretty great in terms of his stance on major labels and how they are affecting the larger artists. His anecdotes regarding the price jacking of his new album because of superior packaging, release date wait times, and a major labels ineptness at conceiving of an ARG is pretty much priceless. |

Various Thoughts on Season Finales » ![]() The Office, Heroes, LOST - promo photos are terrible The Office - a very enjoyable season finale and a promising next season. Tension is key to the success of this show (as it was in the UK version) and I'm happy to see that they have set up future episodes to be as compelling and amusing as they have been in the past. Heroes - if the entire basis of your television show is to build up to one single season finale episode, make sure it counts. Make it really really good. Make it worth watching the previous twenty some odd episodes. Don't cheap out and make something so lame that it makes watchers never want to see another episode ever again. I'm not saying that happened.. just saying if you ever write a TV show make sure you don't do that. Because it would suck. LOST - There isn't much you can say about LOST because no matter what your opinion is, it's based on speculation and conjecture. You don't really know anything. I have to remind myself whenever I watch this show that it's the ride that you have to enjoy and that getting answers / resolution / insight into a bigger picture just isn't possible until it is all over. My biggest problem with the series (as a whole) is that 90% of the conflicts emerge from people refusing to communicate. If Person A would just simply talk openly to Person B, there would be no show. Infuriating at best. |
Videos for you » D.A.N.C.E. Food Fight The 'Food Fight' video just proves that the Japanese are able to take something that is normally perceived as compeltely terrible (aka performance art) and make it into something amusing, clever and awesome. |
White Stripes Video Premiere » There is big buzz about the new White Stripes video for "Icky Thump" that just premiered online. Or, at least, buzz that there is buzz. Frankly (and this goes right in line with my TV On The Radio sentiments) I just never "got" The White Stripes. I'm not saying they don't have some good, or great, songs through their catalog but on the whole it just never struck me as being as gripping as others made it out to be. That being said, the video is worth a watch - great art direction, the performance and "acting" stuff looks great, and to top it all off... it was all shot in Nashville! |

Work Work Work » As has been the norm recently, I'm a bit too busy at work to get my languid browse time in for the day. I apologize for this. In personal happenings it should be noted that one week from today I will be moving out of my house. I've got to finish packing and cleaning out the basement before then. If anyone wants some free doors / shutters / random trash - hit me up because I've got you covered. |

Thomas Allen - Pulp Fiction » The deconstructed paperbook artworks of the Thomas Allen exhibit Pulp Fiction are brilliant. The idea is a simple one but the execution and the photographs take it to a whole new level. I am floored. |
Electronic Polaroid » The polaroids shown here were created with an LED light, a robotic arm, a homemade photo booth and a modified Polaroid with a shutter that can stay open way longer than normal. You can get the whole story and view more image samples right here. The bare bones website of the device (the Fotron 2000) is here but all you need is this video to get the gist. |
Adult Swim - Free Indie Rock Mix » Williams Street / Adult Swim have released another free mix of new music for all to enjoy. And, fortunately, this time it features tunes of the more rock persuasion - SOUND Team, Broken Social Scene, Amusement Parks on Fire, etc. They are also hosting the video for TV On The Radio's "Me-I" which further establishes my stance that people should not be listening to TV On The Radio (the video is alright, the song is a waste of time). |

KNI - relaunched » We launched a new site last week and I love it. I was happy to get rid of the all Flash site and focus on having an HTML / CSS / Javascript based portfolio for so many reasons I won't even dive into them here. Regardless, we've got a new site and I hope everyone goes to check it out and enjoys it all - even the little poem that Arlo wrote for my bio. |
The Paper Airplanes » I recently purchased The Paper Airplanes from Relative Theory on a whim... just a quick review and I was ready to check it out. So far the attached track, "Fences", is the most memorable and immediate (just the right combination of upbeat music mixed with a strangely sad vocal line) but the rest is growing on me. » The Paper Airplanes - Fences
The Dark Knight Villain » So apparently the first pics of Heath Ledger have surfaced as The Joker (highlight all text). You can check out the image here. Personally I feel like it's right on par with the dark style of the new Batman series - just as Scarecrow had some pretty creepy moments in Batman Begins. So far, a promising start to the sequel that will be The Dark Knight. |
Hot Rod - The Movie » The trailer for Hot Rod, the first full-length film featuring Andy Samberg of The Lonely Island and SNL, leaves much to be desired. In fact, it's sort of like a poorly re-hashed Napoleon Dynamite gag - with a fake moustache. Fortunately, this YouTube movie of "Rod Kimble" performing stunt tricks and naming the Seven Deadly Sins generates a whole hearted thumbs up. |

Friday Videos - On Thursday » Ouch! Ankle Injuries Albi The Racist Dragon High Officer - Ouch - self-explanatory. - Fujiya & Miyagi - "Ankle Injuries" - reminescent of the White Stripes "lego video" but more detailed. - Albi The Racist Dragon - this is a quick song from Flight of the Concords - a New Zealand duo along the lines of Tenacious D but less vulgar. They have a new HBO show premiering in June and it could be pretty funny. It should also be noted that Chris Mikesell sent me a link to these guys well over a year ago - thus confirming his place as King of the Internet. - High Officer - apparently a police officer took home some marijuana from a drug bust, baked it into some brownies, and messed up. Hilarious. |
Aloha - Daytrotter » Daytrotter has posted a new session with Aloha. Aside from the great free music, it should be noted that Daytrotter simplified the download procedure and saving songs now takes fewer clicks - very nice! Get the tracks here. |
Sax on the Beach: Volume 2 » I posted the second installment of the Sax On The Beach series today - Volume 2: Even Saxier - and hope that everyone enjoys 18 new vaguely sax-a-licious new songs. Part of me feels dirty for rehashing an old idea and having the output be lower in quality than the original. It's sort of like making a sequel to a Police Academy movie - the first one was pretty ridiculous to begin with, did you really need to make another? That being said, there are some great sax tracks here and it should create an enjoyable listen every now and again. |
Nerd Keyboard Cometh » The Optimus Maximus Keyboard is the stuff of sci-fi dreams. I've been reading about it for awhile but it looks like they are actually going to be taking pre-orders in a few days. You can check out the concept of the keyboard here but I won't be convinced until I actually see one in action. |
Moustache Print by Ryan Hale » Ryan has made available a new print for the Moustache May celebration. It's along the lines of his La Barba Hasta La Muerte print that he created for Whiskerino but, obviously, more moustache centric. It should also be noted that the Moustache May Bazaar is filling up with lots of great items made by the participants. The "Cloudhopper" is particularly great. |

I Met The Walrus » Yesterday while I was busy gushing over the site and works of James Braithwaite I failed to notice that the image I had posted was actually a screenshot from an animated / illustrated film entitled I Met The Walrus. The film is based around a 1969 interview between John Lennon and a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan. Director Josh Raskin has taken the audio from the interview and animated a film around it - and the results are quite incredible. |
UNKLE / Autolux - collab » So, last week I discovered that UNKLE had remixed Autolux and it pretty much sucked. Just a boring, un-inspired take on the song (from what I could gather of the sample I heard.. which did not lead me to want to hear more). That being said, there is another collaboration between the two that is much more along the lines of what I'd hoped for / expected. The track feels like an Autolux song with a few little electronics by way of UNKLE but who knows how the actual collaboration went down. Regardless, it's going into heavy rotation for the time being. » UNKLE - Persons & Machinery (featuring Autolux)

Tulsa Drone - Songs From a Mean Season » Tulsa Drone is a band that creates dark, evocative instrumental tracks with a variety of instrumentation - instruments like the hammered dulcimer. I've had their first album No Wake on regular rotation ever since I ran across it a few years ago... but never heard about anything else from the band, until now. It seems that the band has been hard at work on the follow-up Songs From a Mean Season for some time and even had a few lineup changes to deal with as well. The sophomore album is a every bit as dark as the first - in a way to evokes something eerie, the unseen, or possibly the incomprehensible. Something about it reminds me of David Lynch (when David Lynch was halfway sensible) or cerebral thriller - not just spooks for the sake of spooks, but a thinking mans darkness. It's often tough to explain the emotions that come from music and often best to let them speak for themselves. So, download the following tracks and make up your own mind. "The Plague" is one of the first tracks from the band to feature vocals and I'm still on the fence on how I feel about it.. they fit within the context of the song but I already loved the way the band was able to express themselves without a single word. » Tulsa Drone - Monongahela

Mark Ronson - Versions » Has anyone heard the entirety of the new Mark Ronson album, Versions? I checked out this album previewer thingy but it wasn't really enough insight to satisfy my curiosity. The Bathwater » If the following doesn't sell you on The Art of James Braithwaite then hopefully the large selection of artworks (personal and commercial), the daily scrawl, and various internet links will... If you come across James Braithwaite, wave your arms over your head to make yourself appear larger to him and make as much noise as you can muster. If that doesn't scare him, climb the nearest tree and hope for the best.Seriously, his site is one of the most refreshing, entertaining and engaging things I've seen in some time.. |

LOST » I have huge doubts that the payoff can be anything halfway worth the buildup but LOST has finally gotten interesting again. The Jacob episode this week was out of control in terms of the island creating phenomena that are absolutely un-explainable but it was a gripping episode regardless. I suppose it's the ride that matters the most, not the finale. It was also announced that there are to be three more seasons - each only 16 episodes. Why not just one more 22 episode season? Stretching these things out indefinetly does not make for the highest quality television - it just makes for filler episodes. |

Emily Haines - What is Free To a Good Home? » Looks like Emily Haines will be releasing an addendum EP to her solo debut Knives Don't Have Your Back that is entitled What Is Free To A Good Home?. The disc should be released in the US on July 24th.. I was a big fan of Knives so I was excited to hear the lovely preview of "Rowboat" on Pitchfork. Electric Soft Parade - No Need... » My first encounter with The Electric Soft Parade was at the old Grimeys location where the staffer on duty put them on claiming it to be the next best Brit-rock band. I was hooked from that point on and have been furiously gathering all that I can get from them for some time. The band just recently released No Need To Be Downhearted and it's another quality entry in their whole discography. My problem with the album comes not from the songwriting, or the step forward musically while still maintaining a sense of their past but, rather, with the artwork. Aside from being a 100% departure from their previous releases (visually) it doesn't even appear to be that well done. I understand the message of the juxtaposed album title with the pleasant scene and even the humor in how it could all be sarcastic - despite all of that, I think the album art is amateur at best. The typography (if you can call it that) seems slapped together and the Photoshop drop shadows on the collage "pieces" are a bit out of control. It is disappointing that an album of such fine songs with high repeatability would have such mediocre artwork. » The Electric Soft Parade - Life in the Back-seat

The mystery of the honeybee » Mysterious honeybee killer could make dinner bland - that may seem like an odd headline but the article is completely worth reading. Most people, myself included, don't really think too much about the honeybee and their importance on our ecosystem at large. It turns out that bees pollinate roughly 80% of the plants that make up the human-diet and a massive die off from them could seriously affect available foods - particularly given that scientists have been unable to reproduce the pollination effect with the same effeciency that the bees have. There are several theories regarding what may be killing off the honeybee but, for the most part, it's still a mystery. |

Unkle / Autolux Remix » I am always very skeptical when it comes to remixes of bands that I enjoy but no matter how often I am disappointed by the results I am always intrigued to hear more. It recently came to my attention that UNKLE had put together a remix of "Turnstile Blues" - by Autolux. As it often goes, I was excited to hear the results and disappointed when I actually did. I suggest everyone check it out and form your own opinion but I'm fairly confident that Autolux songs should not be turned into vague dancefloor style experiences. |
